Ponca City Summit

In the fall of 2000, civic leaders past and present joined together to form the Ponca City Summit.
The following objectives clearly explain the purpose of this unique gathering
.

PONCA CITY SUMMIT
Objectives
To reunite and rekindle old friendships and relationships with former citizens of Ponca City.

To highlight and affirm many of the positive aspects of Ponca City

To capitalize on the creativity, intellect and experience of the Summit participants by generating bold and daring ideas about how to make Ponca City even better in the future.

Explore the feasibility of creating a "virtual citizenry" for benefit of both the former and current citizens of Ponca City.

The results of this in-depth look at the community provided numerous recommendations to enable those living in Ponca City the opportunities to enhance our quality of life and to continue to promote economic development to a new level.

The four critical initiatives stemming from the initial Summit meeting included:
  • Education

  • Beautification/Revitalization

  • Community Identity

  • Arts/Festivals

Many successes have been accomplished since the conception of the Summit. Their work continues today in many positive forms and vital areas of our community. While focusing on maintaining the quality of life we have enjoyed in Ponca, we have also been exploring new opportunities through the network of Summit members. Ponca City is truly fortunate to have the support of this dedicated group of leaders with their vision and commitment to our community.

The process of making positive changes within a community is a never ending process and one which takes dedication from many sources. The task at hand is not an easy or overnight process. It continues to take time and many hours of service by a host of volunteers and staff.

In light of the work to be done, at the most recent board meeting in May of 2003, the Summit Board focused on the following areas of emphasis.

  • Continued support for improvements in the areas educational opportunities

  • Working with the City on re-establishing the Ponca City Main Street program and the revitalization of the Downtown business district.

  • Continued support of the economic development programs and initiatives.

A snap shot of the past successes brought to fruition by members of the Summit and other city leaders is as follows:

    EDUCATION:

  • Increase in the ULC attendance and community use.

  • Additional programs at NOC which support the area manufactures and other businesses.

  • Continued expansion of the internet connectivity through out Ponca City and the immediate region through the efforts of the Cimarron Broadband Project and its allies, which include the City, Ponca City News and the Ponca City Schools...

  • Renovation to the existing school buildings and the addition of classrooms and other educational related facilities.

  • Ponca City High School awarded a Blue Ribbon Award from Expansion Management Magazine, the leading site location magazine in the United States, as one of the top 33% of school districts nationwide.

  • A WINNING FOOTBALL & WRESTLING TEAM!!!!

    BEAUTIFICATION/REVITALIZATION:

  • A completely renovated City Hall and Fire station, anchoring the revitalization of the down town area.

  • The re-emergence of the Main Street Program with a renewed vision of the tasks at hand.

  • The renovation of several downtown structures bringing new business into the core down town areas.

  • Upgrading on many major roads and highways leading into and through out the community.

    COMMUNITY IDENTITY:

  • A new high quality marketing brochure aimed at targeted industries, which ties into the Department of Commerce's branding of Oklahoma.

  • A revised updated website, funded by the summit, which brings all of the community together. The new site clearly defines and compliments the Chamber's, the City's and State's logos to help enhance our identity.

  • Revised efforts on the part of the Ponca City Development Authority to market Ponca City and its resources to the world.

    ARTS/FESTIVALS:

  • The Herb and Cherokee Strip Cook-off and Draggin Grand have all expanded and drawn attendance from across the Nation.

  • The national Moto Cross continues to draw larger and larger crowds to the Ponca City track.

  • The Monthly Fly-in at the Ponca City Airport is an ever increasing event, with over 150 airplanes coming from all over the region. Events with continued success are the October Fest, the Cherokee Strip Golf event, and the various Pow Wows held by the area tribes.

  • A new major event started in 2003 will be the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breeders Association, Classic Charity Horse Show.

  • The Poncan Theater continues to bring world renowned artists to the community, such as Mel Tills, The Bellamy Brothers, The Four Seasons, Kathy Mattea and many others as well as movies and local Playhouse Productions.

    ARE WE DONE YET?
No, the tasks set forth as priorities by the Summit will never truly be completed. We will always need to find new ways to enhance our opportunities and tell others of our great community. And most importantly we will always need your support.
