Wastewater Treatment

The wastewater treatment plant treats a daily average of 5 million gallons of wastewater generated by residences, businesses and industries, and discharges the treated wastewater to the Arkansas River. The treatment is a multi-stage process to reduce or remove organic matter, suspended solids, nutrients, disease-causing organisms and other pollutants from wastewater. Every year, approximately 5,000 tons of sludge is produced and converted in the process from an undesirable waste to an environmentally friendly soil enhancer. The City currently has 800 acres of private farm land permitted for the application of the treated sludge. At these application sites various crops are grown and the nutrients in the sludge are used by the crop just as commercial fertilizer is.

The Wastewater Treatment Division is also responsible for Ponca City’s Industrial Pretreatment Program in order to protect, preserve and improve the water sources in the area. This program is implemented through enforcing Federal and State regulations designed to limit pollution from industrial discharges to publicly owned wastewater facilities.

The City Ordinances state that a surcharge by charged for discharges that have strength above the domestic allowable limits, which is implemented by means of BOD concentration in excess of 300mg/l and TSS concentration in excess of 300mg/l.
